Among the congenital or acquired deformities of the auricle, the most common one is the situation where the ears are more protruding than normal, that is, what is popularly called the prominent ear. This problem, which causes psychological negative effects and loss of confidence, especially in children and women, is permanently eliminated with prominent ear aesthetics. To put it simply, prominent ear surgery is the surgery performed to give the correct shape to the cartilage structure that forms the auricle and to keep it that way. Since ear development is usually completed at 5-6 years of age, there is no need to wait until the age of 18 for ear aesthetics as in other aesthetic operations. It can be applied with a lower limit of 6 years old. The success rate of the surgery is up to 90%.
How is Prominent Ear Aesthetics (Otoplasty) Performed?
Although there are different techniques in otoplasty, such as hanging with a thread, entering with an incision that is too small to be noticed behind the ear, the doctor who will perform the operation decides on the most suitable technique for the patient. Prominent ear surgery is performed under general anesthesia in children under the age of 10-12, and under local anesthesia in older people. In the incision technique, the cartilage tissue is shaped by entering through a small incision made behind the ear. Permanent and durable seams are placed in order not to deform the given shape. The operation is completed in an average of 1 hour for both ears. Bandages are attached to the ears. Patients who were administered local anesthesia were discharged from the hospital after 1 hour, and those who received general anesthesia 4 hours later on the same day. After the operation, only the incision scar remains. In prominent ear aesthetics with thread, no incision is made. It is especially preferred by those who do not want general anesthesia and incision. However, depending on the patient’s condition, the doctor may decide on general anesthesia. Medical threads are placed through the upper cartilage tissue of the ear with the help of a needle and pulled to give the desired shape. The holes made by the needle are closed with small tapes. A hair band is attached to the patient’s head. The operation is completed in an average of 15 minutes.
